[Full-time] Operator Maintenance at Virginia Dept of Transportation

We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team who are able to operate light to heavy equipment and hand and power tools (e.g. dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor, chipping machines, chain saws and trimming machines) and perform manual labor. As a maintenance operator, you will: Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions; set up work zones and perform traffic control; learn and maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and laws and use equipment properly and safely; work as part of a team to perform manual labor such as clearing drainage ways, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and other tasks needed to complete road maintenance projects; complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

This position is designated as essential for emergency response which may require work outside of normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of highway maintenance activities and materials. Experience in operation of light, medium and heavy duty equipment. Skill in the operation of hand-held and power tools used for road repairs and maintenance. Experience performing maintenance on equipment and tools. Experience performing heavy manual labor. Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions. Valid Driver?s License required at time of hire with ability to obtain a CDL within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Current CDL with ability to obtain required endorsements. Candidate who hold a CDL permit at time of hire will be preferred. Experience in the maintenance and/or construction of roadways. High school graduate or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the job.

Special Requirements

This position is required to work in emergency situations, which may include work on weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours. Safety shoes are required for performance of job duties. Candidates selected to interview will be required to complete a skills demonstration as part of the interview process. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records check will be conducted. DOT-required medical exam and drug screen for CDL drivers.
